Vacationing with your Dog
Recently we had friends take their first “family” vacation with their four-legged family member. More and more families are opting to travel with their pets and more and more resorts/hotels are becoming pet-friendly. So what are some of the things you must think about when planning a trip with your pet?
Find dog-friendly accommodations: Many hotels are becoming pet friendly but if you aren’t sure just ask! Many will accomodate your dog or cat but don’t advertise so.
Plan dog-friendly activities: You can find local dog parks online or if you are going to the coast there are many beaches that allow dogs. You can also just plan activities like picnics that would allow you to include your pet.
Research dog-friendly restaurants: Again, use the internet! Just google “dog-friendly restaurants” for the specific area you are travelling to. You will be surprised how many options there are now!
Be prepared for accidents: Make sure you pack cleaners and paper towels and possibly extra cash in case an accident occurs.
Budget for extra fees and charges: Speaking of extra cash….not only may there be extra fees for accidents but there also may be extra charges for the dog to stay or travel (if you are flying).
Plan potty breaks in your travel time: Don’t forget to stop for your dog even if you don’t have the urge!
Pack for your pet: Don’t forget your dog’s suitcase! Food, bowls, collars, leashes, and records of up-to-date shots are all important items to pack. Many airlines require a health history but it doesn’t hurt to have it on hand even if you are not flying. You never know when an emergency may happen!
Last but not least have FUN!!! I used to travel everywhere with my dog Snoop and it was a blast! Have you vacationed with your pet? If so, where?
